The Kidney Foundation of Canada – Atlantic is looking for an enthusiastic and outgoing Major Gifts & Planned Giving Associate to join their Development team and play a leadership role in launching a new major gifts campaign and spearheading the organization’s planned giving activities. The ideal candidate has obtained CFRE designation, or is actively pursuing certification.

Working at the Foundation’s office in Halifax, this individual will be part of a committed and cohesive group of volunteers and employees. How Much are Fundraisers Getting Paid? Here are the results of AFP’s Salary Survey

Average compensation for a professional fundraiser in Canada climbed a whopping 11.2% in 2009…to $79,554, according to AFP’s just-released survey. I remain frustrated at the persistent gender salary gap between male and female fundraisers…particularly given that woman comprise 3/4 of the profession. See for yourself.

How Charities Can Curb High Turnover Among Fundraisers

Springtime seems to be a high mobility time of the year in the charitable sector. I see many sector colleagues moving to new positions in the field, at a rate equal to the rate of  “for sale” signs cropping up in residential neighbourhoods in my city.  High turnover of fundraisers costs charities a lot of money…one expert projects that it costs the organization 65 to 83 percent of a fund raiser’s annual salary to replace that person. Government of Canada Summer Jobs Program

Canada’s Economic Action Plan committed $10 million for 2009 and another $10 million for 2010 for Canada Summer Jobs. The initiative provides funding to not-for-profit, public sector and small private sector employers to create summer job opportunities for young people who are full-time students and intend to return to their studies in the next school year. Deadline for applications is February 26, 2010.

Hiring Fundraising Talent: Not for the Faint of Heart

Hiring ethical and talented fundraisers in today’s environment is not for the faint of heart.

Charities in this country are coming under heavy fire by mainstream media, and increasing scrutiny by the donor and legislative communities. (check the Non profit Newscan article at left). Sometimes its for good reason…but not always. 

Let’s face it, its a tough job to raise money for charities. Its competitive. Fundraising departments are often woefully underresourced, relative to the expectation for financial returns. In short, it can be a pressure cooker. No wonder the fundraising profession has unusually high turnover.

Its easy for the general public to forget that what most often draws talented, motivated people to the fundraising profession in the first place is the idea of “the greater good.” Most professionals I have come across in 22 years as a fundraiser chose this line of work because they truly wanted to make a societal difference. Don’t believe me? Talk with a fundraiser about how their job affects lives, community, society, health care, whatever. They get animated when given the opportunity to voice how their job helps leave the world a bit better off than when they found it.

But high turnover in the profession and the insatiable financial need of charities is having the inevitable result. There really are a few bad apples. Posers. Charlatains. Takers.

Looking to hire a fundraiser or fundraising consultant? Check, double-check and triple-check…references, the validity of the list of organizations they claim to have worked with, claims of funds raised. Take advice that was given to me by a successful entrepreneur — when you want to hire, take a long time to decide on the candidate. And when you feel strongly that you have the wrong person in the job, act swiftly.
