TELUS’ Janet Yale on Corporate Philanthropy

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

Principal, Bloom Non Profit Consulting Group

Janet Yale, Executive Vice-President and National Chair of TELUS Community Boards

“When you institutionalize in your culture an attitude of giving time and giving money, that’s when it becomes real.”

TELUS Executive Vice President Janet Yale is clearly proud. Never mind that AFP International just announced that TELUS will receive its top (global) philanthropic corporate award for 2010 in Baltimore this April (the first Canadian company to receive the honour).  As the head of TELUS’ community investment portfolio in Canada, Janet seems most proud of the fact that TELUS has managed to ingrain a culture of philanthropy throughout the company.

I interviewed Janet earlier this week and found her remarkably forthcoming about how TELUS has implemented a democratic and decentralized approach to corporate philanthropy. She also opened the kimono about what charities need to know to be successful in requesting support from TELUS, and how they should go about applying.   More….

The (not so) Little Economic Engine that Could

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010
By Carolyn P. Marshall, CFRE
Partner, Bloom Non Profit Consulting Group

By most accounts, the struggling economy is slowly beginning to recover. But the fallout will likely be felt for many months to come. The non-profit sector, in particular, will continue to struggle to respond to increased demands for service, while trying to cope with decreased revenues from funders and donors. (more…)

5 Minutes with Hon. Margaret (Norrie) McCain

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

by Anne (Coyle) Melanson, BPr, CFRE (Principal, Bloom Non Profit Consulting Group)

Hon. Margaret Norrie McCain

Sitting atop the list of potential major donors for a multitude of Canadian charities simply can’t be a restful place. Particularly these days. And so I asked the perennially warm, engaged, and engaging (Wallace) McCain family matriarch (and lifetime philanthropist), to share a lesson or two for both charities and other philanthropists, based on her wealth of experience as volunteer, activist, and donor…

Sophia Shows How Persistence Pays Off

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

Running a charity to help homeless kids from her family living room has landed 17-year old Sophia Gran-Ruaz the honour of being named Mackenzie Investment’s Top Teen Philanthropist. Since the age of 11, Sophia has demonstrated persistence and a personal commitment to the mission of her charity (Snug as a Bug, Kids Helping Kids), refusing to “take no for an answer.”  Young people in Canada lead all other age groups in their desire to help the less fortunate. Encouraging? You bet. Click here.

Were your donors online in ‘09? Here are some lessons for 2010.

Monday, January 4th, 2010

I took two important lessons from Ipsos Reid’s recent survey of Canadians’ online giving behaviours.

First, our preferred methods of giving and charities of choice are influenced by the region in which we live. (What could be more definitively Canadian than staunch regionalism? — ed.) And second, charities in the medical and health care professions are leaders in forging bonds with donors that result in online donations.

Take a quick look at donors online in ‘09 (click here)….as you set your organization’s fundraising strategy for 2010. Happy New Year!
